The Washington Football Team says it is not considering using the nickname Warriors for its new name because it too closely aligns with Native American themes.
Washington has gone through a long process to rebrand itself after retiring the Redskins name in 2020. The team has been known as the Washington Football Team since then, but it is expected to announce a new name in 2022.
The Warriors name was one of the favorites among fans, but it has now been ruled out. Washington president Jason Wright said in a statement that the team "will not select a name that offends any segment of our community."
The Warriors name has been used by several other sports teams, including the Golden State Warriors of the NBA and the New Zealand Warriors of the NRL. However, Washington does not want to be associated with any Native American imagery.
Wright said that the team is still considering other names, but he did not provide any specifics. He said that the team will make an announcement when it has made a final decision.
