Rust Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison
Maximum Penalty Given for Involuntary Manslaughter
Sentencing Concludes Fatal On-Set Shooting Investigation
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer responsible for the fatal shooting on the set of "Rust" in 2021, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. The shooting, which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, shook the film industry and raised questions about safety protocols on movie sets.
In March 2023, a Santa Fe, New Mexico jury found Gutierrez, 26, guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The trial examined the circumstances surrounding the October 21, 2021 shooting, in which actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun that killed Hutchins during a rehearsal.
Gutierrez received the maximum sentence of 18 months, which was determined by the jury after considering the severity of her actions. She was responsible for ensuring the safety of the firearms on set and failed to follow proper safety procedures.
